Should women go out work?
In the present day society more than more women go out work. This situation has given rise to many social, economic and cultural issues. However, women going out to work have its advantages as well as disadvantages
In accident times women were confined to home. They were expected to do all the household work and to look after their children. Only their husband earned money. Under this situation women had to suffer a lot through the masculine supremacy.
Today there is a large percentage of women than men in the world. It is apparent that most of the women go out work because they are unabale to make both ends meet. In other words they are unable to maintain their families only with the income of their husbands.
The cost of living is going up day by day. With the escalating cost of living, many families feel that they need a dual income to provide decent living conditions and a good education to their children.
According to statement issued by the University Grants Commission, the majority of the students who enter the universities are girls. After receiving higher education in universities, they donot like to waste their knowledge and abilities and they compel to seek employment. They think that they can meaningfully contribute towards the national development. There are a large number of women in the Sri Lanka Administrative service too positions. If they simply stay at home without doing a job, it would be a waste of human resources.
Now let us look at the disadvantages of this situation. When women go to work they have no time to look after there children and elderly members of the family. Most of them are looked after by servants. It is said that mother's love and affection is essential for a child for his mental and physical growth. In the present day society some children grow up with many problems. Some drop out of schoo, others take to vices and often get involved with gangs. Some children grow up lazy and confused. They need the full time guidance and support of a mother.
Today thousands of Sri Lankan women are employed in the Middle East countries. Some women renew their employment contracts and stay in foreign countries for long periods. As a result of this, the peaceful environment prevailed in their families has been shattered. Their husbands have taken to liquor and other vices. Their children have even become drug addicts. It is true that these women bring a lot of money to Sri Lanka as foreign exchange, but their family lives are bleak.
