Wild elephants in Sri Lanka
Elephant is regarded as the biggest animal in the world and it is believed that elephants are an assest to a country. Sri Lanka is famous thought out the world for beautiful asion elephants. So every year hundred amd thousand of tourist come to Sri Lanka to visit these elephants with their natural habitate in national park like Yala and Vilpattuw. But it's very sad to say today, the number of elephants in our country is decreasing day by day due to various reasons. It is said that clearing forests dor human settlement farming and development purposes is the main reasons for this problem. Under this situation elephant lost their natural habitat. Elephant lost their food and water. As a result of this many elephants come to villages in search of foods and water. When they come to villages they damage to cultivations. When they damage to cultivations and houses people compel to kill elephants. This is very sad state of affairs.
According to the statistic of wild life conservation department last year more than 1000 elephants have been killed by people. As well as more than 50 people have been killed by elephants. Think how pathetic the situation is. But it is very sad to say the relevant authorities are so passive regarding this grave problem. In addition to these people kill elephants for their valuable tusks. As well as skin and hair only used to make ornaments. It is said that only 3000 elephants are left in our country. So now time has come for us to think twise about this problem and to stop man elephant conflict.
It's believe that establishing elephant coridoars, between the forest areas is a good solution to this problem. Elephant orphanages for the orphaned elephant is temporary solution for this problem. Anyway the relevant authorities should find out good way to send these elephants to find the forest again with out keeping them in orpanagers fora long time. Establishing electrical fences around the border villages is a timely move for this burning problem. Any how the government should take stern action to minimize this problem.
