Drug menace

At present drug menace has become a burning problem in Sri Lanka. As well as it has become a common problem in many countries thought the world. The drugs such a heroine, brown sugar, liquor as well as cigarettes are used by people. This is not a new thing to the society but the pathetic situation is that the number of drug addicts is increasing drastically in urban areas as well as rural areas. According to the statistics of a recent survey conducted by the police department more than 50% of the crimes are drug related.

However, there are so many adverse effects of this situation. The drug addicts think only about their temporary satisfaction. They never understand the severe adverse effects of using drugs. When people use drugs they become unconscious or insane. They don't know even who he is, where he is and what he does and become unable to recognize even their own parents and siblings. As a result of this so many family disputes arise and the family peace is violated. Further people tend to waste their money in a useless way for these drugs. When they do this continuously they become poor and poor day by day. As a result the poverty increases and when they have no money to buy drugs further, they tend to do various illegal things to find money such as robbing. As a result of this so many crimes take place and criminal gang are formed. Not only the drug addicts lose their wealth but also they loose their health. They have no suffer with so many health problems. Most of the lung cancers are created due to smoking, when they are smoking, the people near them also have to suffer. Above all, finally the religious and cultural value system is broken down, socially unaccepted generation is created. Not only adult, it is said that even school children are addicted to drugs. This is very sad state of affairs.

In my point of view, there are so many reasons for this situation. Mainly the personality disorders, mental disorders cause for this situation. Most people don't have a good will power. So they are not able to bear up the sadness and happiness of life or the truth of life in a balanced mind. So to overcome their dissatisfactions they get addicted to drugs. Further the family problems and stress lead people to use drugs Moreover youth unrest, associating bad peer groups and social influences also cause to drugs. Negligence of parents also causes this drug addiction. On the other hand politicians and other rich people who have power and money compel to sell these drugs to people and earn quite a lot of money. They never think about innocent people. They want only to earn money. The dope peddlers never get caught by police because of invisible political connections. Above all departing from religion cause this. We all know that avoiding use of drugs is one of the main five principles (pansil) of Buddhism.

Now it is high time to take measures to overcome this burning problem. First of all it is essential to create awareness among the public about the bad effects of this. Counseling centers can be established throughout the country for this. It is the duty of the government to impose tough laws against these illegal drugs sellers. Moreover rehabilitation programs can be implemented throughout the country. However, the government can't do this alone. The social service association, voluntary organizations and educated people should give their fullest co-operation to eradicate this grave problem for Sri Lanka before it goes beyond control. Further the school children should be made aware about the health problems and social problems that they many have to face if they get addicted to drugs. Parental care, Love and affection are essential to escape innocent school children from this trap. The hospitals and religious institutes can do a great service in uprooting this grave problem. In my point of view when people get closer and closer to religion they will get away from this bad habit.

As the future guardians of Sri Lanka, it's our prime duty to escape these innocent civilians and school children from the demons, who are dope peddlers. We should not allow them to devour our future generation, wealth and health, It's our duty to create a healthy, wealthy, socially valued and accepted future generation.
